Mississippi in a smoking quandary
Washington County judge Richard Smith recently ruled that the city of Greenville could not ban smoking in bingo halls without the same prohibition in casinos. The ruling has put other cities across Mississippi in a quandary where public smoking bans have taken effect, as these municipal anti-smoking ordinances don’t appear to specifically mention bingo halls. A bill sought earlier this year would have directed the Mississippi Gaming Commission to adopt a rule addressing smoking in places where gambling is legal. However the bill simply died. Now local bingo hall operators feel they are being picked on, and think that if casino customers are allowed to smoke freely then bingo hall customers should have the same rights. The judge’s ruling says the city must treat casinos and bingo halls the same way. He says Greenville’s ordinance was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause under both the state and U.S. constitutions.
The city of Greenville opted to take bingo halls out of the ordinance rather than appeal Smith’s ruling, however, the city had argued it could not include casinos because of them being regulated by the Gaming Commission. Since 1st July 2006, Mississippi banned smoking in all publicly-owned buildings, which includes state government buildings and buildings leased by local governments, city halls, and county courthouses, however, there was no prohibition made on casinos or bingo halls.
Over 600 bingo players battle it out
Over 600 bingo players from across, Michigan and Ohio gathered together this week to compete in a Bingo Night of Champions – The World Series of Bingo at Classic Bingo III in Tecumseh. There was a buffet dinner, entertainment from singer Crystal Gage and a total of $50,000 in prizes. The biggest single payout was $20,000. Normally the biggest jackpot available would be $1,000 or $2,000. Playing was free. This was a night for the customer, to give something back to them. A free chance to win up to $20,000 is not to be sniffed at. As the 600+ people arrived to play bingo, armed with various coloured dabbers, some in specially-made carrying cases, teddy bears, horse shoes, elephants and assorted plastic figurines, and photos of family, they moved quickly to find what would hopefully be their lucky seat for the night, some sat with US $1 bills in front of them. As the announcement came that play was about to begin, the players all stood up together, each with a dabber in hand, and with a resounding cheer, they all ceremoniously yelled “bingo” in friendly unison, and the bingo play began. What a great way to bring people together and keep community spirit alive!
Children can play bingo
A bingo hall located near the intersection of U.S. 181 and South Presa has recently been revitalised, and is under the new ownership of Chris Keller. The new owner of Hilltop bingo says he leased the old Hilltop facility in order to re-open its historic doors. The revamp includes a makeover of the snack bar, renovated bathrooms, repaved parking lots, and a new smoking room for the comfort of everyone. Aiming for a ‘family-friendly’ environment, which welcomes the whole family; I would have to question whether it is such a good thing that children as young as 5 years can play their own cards. With ten $500 games each night, one would imagine it is perfectly feasible that a child playing bingo could win. I am not personally familiar with the laws of this area, but I would have to question the legality as well as the moral ethics of encouraging young children to gamble in this way. Please post your comments on here if you agree or disagree with me. It would be interesting to see how others view this.
