Most of us are feeling the pinch of spiraling gas prices this summer, but Managers at Bingo Plus on Montana Street in El Paso say they are seeing an increase in business.
“I’ve been doing this for eight years and every year it’s been slow in the summer except for this year,” said a Bingo Plus game operator said.
Employees of the bingo hall said on average they count 90 players in the morning, but this summer, they’re catering to more than a hundred, with even higher numbers for evening games, and they think it might have something to do with the extra money people are paying for gas.
At least one bingo player has confirmed that he plays bingo because he wants to cover fuel costs. Robert Luera is reported to have said “To fill up my tank its $70-80 a week. Right now with the way gas prices are, we can always use that extra dollar”.
Popular Grimsby Bingo Hall to close
Online bingo and the UK smoking ban are the root causes of the closure of yet another bingo hall.
The Queens Bingo Club, long-standing bingo hall Grimsby on Frederick Street in Grimsby will call its last numbers in September, after almost 50 years of business.
The site has been sold to Keigar Homes Limited, which has permission to build a £4.5 million development consisting of 33 low-cost homes.
Queens’s manager Carl Whitfield who has worked for the company for 26 years said: “Come the smoking ban we lost about 25 per cent of the trade because your gamblers want to be able to smoke. The government says that two thirds of the population are non-smokers, well they might be, but they aren’t gamblers”.
